Click, Next Story
It began with an antique store and a 1940s View-Master. The faded reel was a glimpse into a different era of storytelling, and it sparked a question. What if it could see different versions of the past? I pictured the figures in the slides acting out scenes of violence. Ghosts telling their own stories in haunted places. High concept, maybe a little unhinged. But from there, Devil Trap Disco was born.
When it comes time to write a sequel, I plan on spending a couple of months hitting up antique shops and old stores around New England. The good stuff always finds you in places like that.
Once & Future DTD Comic
Devil Trap Disco was dreamed up of as a comic book series, along the way it became a Supernatural Noir novel.
Devil Trap Disco began its life as a comic book. I wrote dozens upon dozens of scripts, finally finishing ten full issues. I started working on character designs and storyboarding the first issue. That's when a thought crept in.
What if I don't get to finish the whole series?
What if one or two issues is all that ever gets printed and shipped? I kept working. But the thought didn't leave…it transformed.
A novel. I could tell the story in its entirety. Or close enough.
I was ready to push ahead with Issue 1 of the DTD comic book, but I decided, why not write a couple of chapters first?
Forty-six chapters later (seventy-eight if you count all the ones I deleted), I'm so excited to finish editing this novel and send it scratching and howling out into the night.
And one day, it may just make it’s way back to comics.
